Benjamin Lee credits his vibrant business savvy and enduring work ethic to his early years “toiling” his way up in the “family business”, where he gained 15 invaluable years working in all facets of sales in the battery and consumer electronic arena. One striking example of his foresight is urging his father, Harry Lee, to invest in a virtually unknown product at that time in the mid 90’s – the first version of the Ni-Mh (Nickel Metal Hydride) Rechargeable AA and AAA cell batteries. These batteries were initially brought out in the market by Toshiba but set at a very high price point. Toshiba was not successfully marketing these new products and wanted to unload their entire U.S. inventory. Ben implored his dad to buy out Toshiba’s complete west coast stock and inventory. Within the course of one year, Battery City, Inc. had sold over 75,000 Ni-MH battery cells and almost 15,500 chargers at a price less than 1/3 of the original retail price. NiMh batteries became an instant success among digital camera enthusiasts, and Battery City, Inc. became the “toast” of digital camera online chat rooms, with tens of thousands of hits in the days before Battery City even had a semi-workable website. Since those early days, Ben’s dad has consistently operated the business from a small, retail storefront, creating a strong loyal clientele based on personal service but investing in little to none marketing strategies. It would be foreseeable that father-son clashes would be inevitable, especially considering Ben’s considerable sales and computer-savvy skills. In light of Harry’s imminent retirement, Ben has decided to take the “bull by the horn” with his father’s blessings, and take the business into the 21st century, to the place where he had always envisioned the business go.
